Photographed in Wyoming. The word mustang comes from the Spanish word, mustengo, which means ownerless beast. The American mustangs came from Spanish horses brought to the Americas in the 16th Century that escaped and became feral. Over time, other kinds imported horses joined with wild Spanish horses, including quarter horses and draught horses.
